The 2010 cane crushing season has been one to forget.·Cyclone Ului in March left its mark by increasing the amount of dirt brought into the factory with the cane causing processing difficulties.·The wettest crushing season on record has meant a lot of time lost as machinery could not access the fields to harvest the cane.·Final commissioning of the furfural plant which is closely integrated to the sugar mill was hampered by these interruptions.·
The furfural plant was operated independently for a couple of days however dwindling bagasse supplies has meant it will not be possible to produce furfural until July next year.
The unprecedented rainfall in the latter part of the season and in particular in November·has prompted the Mill Board to call an end to the 2010 crush. CEO John Power said,·"The Board of the Co-operative met on Monday 22nd to review the situation and also·consulted with the Canegrowers negotiating committee. It was jointly agreed that it was·impractical and uneconomic to continue to try and crush the remaining cane and·therefore the 2010 season has been closed. This means that about 450,000 tonnes of·cane will not be harvested this year. This obviously has serious implications for our
industry and all stakeholders".
PSM Biorefinery are providing commissioning support to Arcoy Biorefinery's new furfural plant (Panoli, India), which has also been delayed by the unseasonal and heavy rain. The last time it rained in Panoli during November was 55 years ago!
