Innovative Minds: Converting Biomass to Chemicals and Energy

Since inception, DalinYebo has successfully patented, commercialised and licensed its proprietary technology to extract a chemical called furfural from agricultural waste materials, whilst co-generating electricity from the balance of the lignocellulose. The basis of this technology is its ability to provide a lower cost production method.

Through its international trading network, DalinYebo also markets and sells furfural and furfuryl alcohol.

The company is based in Durban, South Africa, the heart of the South African Sugar industry, and has its roots in the provision of chemical engineering services to the industry. DalinYebo focuses on the development, marketing and licensing of technology (and the market development for its resulting products!) based on renewable/sustainable resources, such as agricultural wastes, for: 

• the manufacture of bio-based chemicals (e.g. furfural and its many by-products) and
• the co-generation of electricity.

DalinYebo is a privately owned South African company, founded in 2001 by a group of entrepreneurs with skills ranging from R&D chemistry, chemical engineering, marketing and manufacturing. We are experienced professionals and are equally 'at home' in the academic world as in project and engineering environments.

Wealth Creation

The creation of wealth is at the heart of the DalinYebo (Xhosa: Wealth Creation) ethos. DalinYebo adds value to forestry and agricultural vegetable matter, either crops or by-products, through the invention and application of processes that convert lignocellulosic plant components into commercial chemicals and energy, without interfering with food and water cycles. 

Intrinsic to this value addition is the internalisation of the so-called triple bottom line. Profitability, social awareness and caring for the environment are key elements of our business ethos.  Technology push and market pull create R&D and new business opportunities that will only be converted into projects when there is a favourable chance that water management, pollution and poverty alleviation can be addressed to peer-reviewed satisfaction.
